Greenwood, Spirits Claim Second Consecutive Shutout

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A 8-0 victory by the Salem soccer team in its home opener against Agnes Scott at Varsity Field marked the first time in program history that the Spirits have won back-to-back games in shutout fashion to open a season.

Salem, which moved to 2-0 on the slate, was led offensively by Baylee Greenwood, who scored two goals and dished out two assists. Greenwood was one of seven Spirits to net a goal in the victory. Teammates Tori Long, who started in goal for the Spirits, and Alexcina Wartski combined for the shutout victory.

"Our team worked really well out there today at moving the ball," said head coach Robin Ramirez. "Getting goals from seven different players was very nice to see."

Greenwood drove home the first of five first half goals at the 18:30 mark when she converted a shot from 30-feet out. Just under two minutes later, at the 23rd minute, Anna Fretwell extended the Salem lead to 2-0 after converting a pass from Layla Locklear and Kylie Clark.

The Spirits' offense continued roll when first year's Caelen Gaul and Ashley Linden teamed up for the third goal of the contest as Gaul drove home her first collegiate goal at the 22:50 mark.

Salem's final two goals of the first half came inside the final seven minutes. Greenwood netted her second, the fourth Salem goal, at the 38th minute when Fretwell hit her open teammate for the goal. Just over a minute later, at 39:13, Lili Payne converted her first collegiate goal to help the Spirits close out the half with a 5-0 lead.

Mikalynne Shell found the back of the net for the second time in as many matches, opening second half scoring with a goal at the 54th minute. Senior Ellie Montes picked up her fourth goal of the campaign and Salem's seventh of the match in the 72nd minute when she took advantage of a pass from Greenwood.

First year standout Isabel Scott provided the Spirits with an 8-0 lead at the 76th minute, following a pass from Greenwood, driving the ball past Agnes Scott netminder Ashley Kopczyk.

Salem finished the match with 31 shots, including 12 shots on goal, while Agnes Scott (0-2) was limited to just three shots (two shots on goal). Carsun Neubauer was the only player to have multiple shots for the Scotties.

Wartski stopped both shots on goals for Agnes Scott, while Kopczyk finished with just four saves in 90 minutes for the Scotties.

Salem wraps up the weekend with a 2 p.m. match against Guilford on Sunday, September 5th.
