Salem Blanks Sweet Briar 2-0 to Conclude Weekend

SWEET BRIAR, Va. – Sophomore Baylee Greenwood notched her third multi-goal match of the season and was the catalyst for a Salem offense that capped off its third shutout victory of the 2021 season, as the Spirits triumphed 2-0 over Sweet Briar on September 12th.

Salem (4-2) also received a pair of solid performances from goalkeepers Jordan Tomberlin and Tori Long. Tomberlin, who finished with a pair of first half saves, gave way to Long, who picked up her second win between the pipes. Long had three stops in the second half to preserve the shutout, giving Salem five saves as a unit. The two faced 10 Sweet Briar shots, including six shots on goal.

Greenwood, who had previously netted two-goal matches versus Warren Wilson (Sept. 1) and Agnes Scott (Sept. 4), drove home a pair of second half goals to highlight the Salem offense. The Spirits attempted 18 shots (11 shots on goal) over the course of the match, led by the trio of Greenwood, Anna Fretwell and Ashley Linden. Greenwood attempted six shots (five SOG) while Fretwell came through with four shots (one) and Linden had three shots (two).

Salem was held scoreless in the first half for the first time since clashing with Maryville at the USA South Conference Tournament Semifinals on November 8, 2019. However, Greenwood responded by beating the right side of Sweet Briar netminder Katelyn Meyer in the 63rd minute to deliver the first Spirit goal of the contest.

With one second remaining in the match, Greenwood converted her second goal of the match—team-best seventh of the season—to push the advantage to 2-0.

Meyer was peppered with Salem shots throughout the match, facing 11 shots on goal and making nine saves in the process.

The Spirits put the finishing touches on their four-match road swing at Ferrum on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when the two clash at 7 p.m.
