The Salem soccer team picked up its seventh season-opening win in program history on Saturday, September 3rd, when the Spirits claimed at 9-0 victory over Regent in Norfolk, Va.

SALEM vs. SWEET BRIAR
Tuesday marks the second all-time meeting between the two programs on the pitch. The first meeting took place in Sweet Briar on September 12, 2021, with Salem earning a 2-0 victory that afternoon.

Salem finished off that victory with 18 shots (11 shots on goal) with Baylee Greenwood delivering both goals for the Spirits. Ashley Linden was also active in the contest with three shots (two SOG).

ANALYZING SWEET BRIAR
The Vixens opened their season with a 3-2 setback to Trinity (D.C.) on Friday, September 2nd. Both Sweet Briar goals came off the foot of Carolina Lewis, who attempted 13 shots (six shots on goal) in the contest. Sophie Vargesko was also active with four shots on the contest, while Katelyn Meyer finished with two saves in 69 minutes in net.

The Vixens are led by Kaitlyn Barbour, who served as an assistant coach at Salem for two seasons.

SALEM IN HOME OPENERS
The Spirits enter the match with an 11-2 mark in home openers dating back to 2008, missing the 2021 home opener because of the cancellation of the season due to COVID-19. Salem rattled off 10 straight victories in its home openers between 2009 and 2018. Randolph-Macon halted that streak in 2019 with a 6-0 win at Varsity Field, but Robin Ramirez got the Spirits back in the win column in the home opener in 2021 with a decisive 8-0 victory over Agnes Scott.

TWO PLAYERS, TWO GOALS APIECE
The duo of Ashley Linden and Darilyn Nieto notched two goals each for the Spirits, becoming the 16th set of teammates to score multiple goals for the Salem in a match in program history and first since Oct. 1, 2016.

The last time that multiple Salem players scored at least two goals in the same match was on September 1, 2021. The result was a 9-0 win by the Spirits, who defeated Warren Wilson in a non-conference clash. The duo of Baylee Greenwood (three goals) and Ellie Montes (two) achieved the feat.

OUTTAKES FROM SALEM'S WIN VERSUS REGENT

  • Salem senior goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin anchored the defensive attack by making two saves, while her teammates limited Regent to two shots, both on goal.

  • Nathaly Berrezueta attempted two shots against the Royals, including one shot on goal, as she scored the first goal of her collegiate career.
  • It marks the fifth time in program history that Salem has opened the season with a shutout and first time since 2013 and 2014, when the Spirits downed N.C. Wesleyan (3-0) and Greensboro (12-0), that two season openers resulted in shutouts. Last season, Salem came through with a 9-0 win over Warren Wilson.
