LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPIRITS
The Salem soccer team completed its three-match eight-day stretch of road matches with a 2-0 setback to Randolph in Lynchburg, Va., on Saturday, September 9th.

The WildCats scored their first goal in the eighth-minute, on an unassisted strike by Madison Booker, before tacking on an insurance goal in the 57th-minute with a goal off the foot of Steryn Woodward.

Salem, which had scored 10 goals in its first two contests, was limited to four shots over the course of the match against the WildCats. Two of those shots, both shots on goal, came from sophomore Darilyn Nieto. The others came from Nathaly Berrezueta and Layla Locklear.

Meanwhile, Randolph countered with 11 shots (eight SOG), and a strong performance in net from Abby Gilbert. Gilbert, who claimed the victory in net, made four saves on the afternoon.

Salem was led in goal by Mireya Sanchez (two saves) and Marissa Doutrich (four), who combined for six saves.

SALEM MAKES HOME DEBUT VERSUS SCOTTIES
The Spirits enter the match with a 12-2 mark in home openers dating back to 2008, missing the 2021 home opener because of the cancellation of the season due to COVID-19. Salem rattled off 10 straight victories in its home openers between 2009 and 2018.

Randolph-Macon halted that streak in 2019 with a 6-0 win at Varsity Field, but Robin Ramirez got the Spirits back in the win column in the home opener in 2021 with a decisive 8-0 victory over Agnes Scott.

In 2022, Salem picked up its 12th win in a home opener by virtue of an 8-0 victory over Sweet Briar.

THROUGH THREE MATCHES…
Salem has allowed just four goals through the first three matches of the 2023 slate, outscoring the opposition 10-3 in that span.

The Spirits are led offensively by Darilyn Nieto, who has scored eight of the 10 goals and accounts for a team-best 16 points. The Greensboro, N.C., sophomore leads the way in both shots (20) and shots on goal (15).

Nieto is joined offensively by Nathaly Berrezueta and Giselle Ramos, who have one goal each for Salem. Ramos shares the team lead in assists (two) with Layla Locklear, while Berrezueta and Taylor Gable have one assist each.

Salem's defensive efforts, led by Isabel Scott, Caitlin Clements and Serenity Powell, have resulted in 31 shots and 18 shots on goal by opposing offenses.

Goalkeepers Mireya Sanchez and Marissa Doutrich have both played three matches and 135 minutes in net for the Spirits. Doutrich leads the unit with saves (nine) and wins (two), but the pair combined for a shutout, which came in 7-0 fashion against Hollins in the season opener.
