SVU Ends Spirits Season with 3-0 Shutout

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Southern Virginia, which earned the No. 1 overall seed in the USA South Tournament, notched its ninth shutout of the season against a league opponent as the Knights posted a 3-0 victory over Salem in the opening round conference tournament.

The Knights' offense was firing on all cylinders, finishing with 42 shots (12 shots on goal), with seven players having at least two shots in the match. Makinna Winterton led the way with 12 shots (three shots on goal), while Maybel Harris attempted seven shots (three SOG).

Salem was limited to just one offense to just one shot, which came off the foot of Darilyn Nieto. Meanwhile, the Spirits' defense was led by Mireya Sanchez, who had eight saves among the 11 shots on goal directed at her. Her counterpart, Katrina Gardner, earned the win in net despite not facing a shot on goal.

Winterton notched the first goal of the contest in the 20th-minute, following a pass from Claire Stephens. Harris stretched the lead to two in the 59th-minute on an unassisted strike.

The third and final Southern Virginia goal came from Bailey Ricker, who drove home a pass from Winterton in the 63rd frame, to make for the 3-0 final.
