Salem Soccer Receives 2023 Postseason Accolades

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem soccer program received a series of accolades as part of the 2023 offseason on Monday, November 27th.

Three members of the Spirits 2023 unit—Nathaly Berrezueta, Layla Locklear, Isabel Scott—were selected to the 2023 Academic All-District Men's and Women's Soccer Teams, selected by College Sports Communicators.

The College Sports Communicators (CSC) recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA — for each gender.

The USA South Athletic Conference is represented by a total of 17 student-athletes from one men's team (Brevard) and three women's squads (Brevard, Methodist, Salem). Academic All-District honorees advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.

The Spirits were also recipients of the Fall Sportsmanship for all 10 USA South women's soccer programs. During the 2004-2005 academic year the USA South Athletic Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted a Conference-wide Sportsmanship Award.

The team garnering the most votes receives that sports' Sportsmanship Award. The institution which wins the most individual sport awards will be presented with the overall USA South Sportsmanship Trophy. The award was developed as a result of the SAAC's commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike environment on each of our campuses.

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee hopes that by awarding a Sportsmanship Award, the members of the USA South will understand the importance of this issue. It is vital that good sportsmanship be demonstrated in the arena of competition.
