Spirits Place Seventh in Guilford College Invite

GREENSBORO, N.C. –
The Salem swim team completed its return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 5, by finishing seventh at the Guilford College Invitational held at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The Spirits, who finished with 55 points in the day-long event, had four individual Top-15 finishes and one Top-10 team outing (seventh) in the 200-yard medley relay.

The first race of the day was the 100-yard butterfly, which included Salem's Olivia Kleven, who placed 11th in a time of 1:13.40. She was just over 11 seconds off the pace established UNC Pembroke's Ketlyn Rodriguez Matos, who captured first place with a mark of 1:02.30.

Kleven grabbed the first Top-10 of the year for the Spirits in the 100-yard breaststroke, tapping the wall in 1:23.15, recording the eighth-best time of the event. Salem's Emily Inman wrapped up her second event of the day with a time of 1:43.08 in the 100-yard breaststroke, placing 24th in the process.

Salem earned its second Top-10 finish of the event in the 200-yard medley relay where the combination of Allison Wakefield, Kleven, Inman and Madison Robertson combined for a time of 2:38.36, placing seventh. Top honors in the event went to UNC Pembroke, which posted the only sub-two-minute time (1:56.05).

Kleven posted her second Top-10 of the afternoon session in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing ninth in a time of 2:47.92. She was joined in the event by Madison Robertson, who finished 18th with a time of 3:17.78.

Kleven narrowly missed her third individual Top-10 in the 200-yard freestyle, placing 12th after tapping the wall in 2:33.31. She was just over three seconds behind 10th-place finisher Leilani Williams (Sweet Briar), who finished in 2:30.08.

Kleven was one of four Spirits taking part in the 200-yard freestyle, along with Inman (3:03.97) and Robertson (3:06.48), who finished 22nd and 23rd, respectively. Wakefield, who placed 26th, capped off the event with a time of 3:13.62.

Jaclyn Dennis raced to a 33rd-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke, wrapping up the event in 2:00.21. Teammate Kristen Kellogg also participated in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing 34th at a time of 2:21.90.

Inman posted the best finish of six Salem competitors in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing 37th with a time of 1:22.82. She was followed by Allison Wakefield (1:25.32) and Jaclyn Dennis (1:36.13), who finished 40th and 44th, respectively. JaLisa Lumpkin (2:01.85) and Kristen Kellogg (2:08.60) followed shortly thereafter, placing 46th and 47th.

Four Spirits raced in the 50-yard freestyle, including Robertson who enjoyed the best team time (32.27), en route to a 24th-place finish. Dennis closed in 36th, with a time of 41.62, followed by the duo of Lumpkin (53.08) and Kellogg (1:00.18), placing 39th and 40th, respectively.

Salem returns to the water in two weeks when the Spirits participate in the William Peace Double Dual at the Triangle Aquatic Center in Raleigh, N.C. For more information on Salem swimming check out www.salemspirits.com.
