Tennis receives several Great South Honors

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Great South Athletic Conference announced the women's tennis All-Conference award winners at a banquet held in Atlanta on Friday night. Mariel Herrera of Agnes Scott claimed the league's top prize of Player of the Year, Mount Mary's Andrea Monacelli won Freshman of the Year honors and Salem's Kevin Fleck was selected Coach of the Year by his peers.

Mariel Herrera (pictured at right), a senior from Dacula, Ga., compiled an 8-3 overall record as she helped guide the Scotties to the 3-seed in the 2014 GSAC Tennis Tournament. She held a perfect 5-0 record in conference play and did not drop a set in the league all season long.

Andrea Monacelli, a freshman from Sussex, Wis., was a solid force in the lower flights for the Blue Angels this year--a vital component of one of Mount Mary's deepest squads in school history. In singles action, Monacelli tallied a 6-4 overall record, going an undefeated 2-0 at both No. 5 and No. 6 flights. At No. 3 doubles, she tallied a perfect 3-0 record.

In just his first year at the helm of the Spirits' tennis program, Kevin Fleck led Salem to a 10-4 overall record, an unblemished 4-0 mark in league play, and the No. 2 seed in the 2014 GSAC Tennis Tournament. Fleck graduated from Clemson with a financial management degree in 2009. He was a 2007 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men's Tennis Team Member and a four-year letter winner for the Tigers.
