Spirits Begin Tennis Season Versus Southern Virginia

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem tennis team begins its 2019-20 slate on Saturday when it hosts Southern Virginia at 2 p.m. at the Bert Lain Tennis Center.

The Spirits look to replicate their 2018 season opener, which resulted in a decisive 9-0 triumph over Hollins on Sept. 29. Salem finished last season with a 5-11 mark, garnering wins at Guilford, Hollins, Mary Baldwin and William Peace during the spring slate.

The Salem squad, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Ed Steele, will feature three seniors—Makenna Mason, Carmen Wilkins and Grace Wilson. That trio combined for 23 of the 37 singles victories in 2018-19, which included nine by Mason and seven each from the duo of Wilkins and Wilson.

Southern Virginia heads to the Triad to take part in for its fifth match of the season. The Knights opened the season against The College of New Jersey (Aug. 31) before taking part in the Virginia Wesleyan Invitational on Sept. 13-14. Southern Virginia will square off against Shaw, on Friday, Sept. 20, before the clash against Salem on Saturday.
