Spirits Prepare to Face Hollins Saturday, Guilford Sunday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – One week after notching its first win of the season, a 6-3 victory over Ferrum, the Salem tennis team hosts its final home match of the fall slate when Hollins pays a visit to the Triad on Oct. 5 at 3:30 p.m. The Spirits will make a quick turnaround on Sunday, Oct. 6, when they head to Guilford for a 2 p.m. meeting with the Quakers.

Salem rebounded from a difficult season opening setback to Southern Virginia by claiming five wins in singles play as the Spirits downed Ferrum at the Bert Lain Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

Makenna Mason, the No. 1 seeded singles player for the Spirits, was responsible for one of the wins as she downed Autum Murray-Burns by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Teammate Lily Farr, the No. 2 seed, followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Jordan Thompson.

Ferrum's lone singles win came from Hailee Green, who downed Morgan Sholz by scores of 6-4, 6-4 (10-5) in the clash of No. 3 seeds. Salem got back on track with a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Haley Gilley, who took down fellow No. 4 seed Mallory Scott.

Grace Wilson's 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Ferrum's Chelsea Zizzi was also key in the Spirits' win on Saturday afternoon. As was teammate Carmen Wilkins, who came through with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Madison Wright in a meeting of No. 6 seeds.

Saturday's match will mark the first of the season for Hollins, who finished 5-14 in 2018-19.

Guilford took part in the ITA South Region Championships on Sept. 27-28 in Rome, Ga., but it will mark the first team competition for the Quakers in 2019-20.
