LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Salem tennis team wrapped up a three-match, two-day stretch with an 8-1 setback at Randolph on Sunday, September 18th.

The lone victory in the match against the WildCats by the Spirits came from first year Harley Hedrick, who closed out a 2-6, 6-2, 12-10 win over Gianna Cabrera.

Jenna Fink and Cassidy Bell provided the host WildCats with their first point in doubles with an 8-0 win against Emily Griffis and Tiara Howard. Harper Whetzel and Cabrera followed that with an 8-1 victory in No. 2 doubles against the tandem of Cadence Durham and Hedrick.

Randolph's No. 1 doubles team of Valentina Santos and Sabrina Dickerson stretched the lead to 3-0 in the match with an 8-0 victory over Alana Bridges and Haley Gilley.

Bell picked up her second win of the afternoon at the Randolph Tennis Courts in singles action with a 6-0, 6-0 win against Howard. Dickerson clinched the team win for Randolph by downing Griffis in the battle of No. 2 singles by a 6-3, 6-1 margin.

Santos provided the WildCats with a 6-0 advantage by defeating Durham in No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-0). After Hedrick put the first point of the day on the board for Salem in No. 5 singles, Randolph stretched the lead to 7-1 with a three-set victory (4-6, 6-3, 10-8) from Whetzel against Gilley in No. 3 singles.

Randolph's Fink also scratched out a three-set win in No. 4 singles, defeating Bridges, for the eighth point of the afternoon.

SALEM NOTES FROM WEEKEND
-Salem opened the season with an 8-1 win over Patrick & Henry CC. That moved the Spirits' winning streak to five matches, which carried over from the conclusion of the 2021-22 campaign, which ended with four wins. It marked the first five-match streak in program history, which spanned from February 23-March 17, 2011. The longest winning streak in program history for the Spirits (seven matches) lasted from April 5-April 26, 2014.
-Haley Gilley ended the weekend with a 2-1 mark in singles action, claiming both victories in No. 3 singles.
-Alana Bridges, Cadence Durham, Harley Hedrick and McKinley Rice also snagged singles wins this weekend for Salem.
