Spirits Battle the Vixens to Five Games

September 30- The Spirits of Salem College hosted a volleyball tri-match with Shenandoah University and Sweet Briar College. In the first game, Shenandoah dominated the Spirits by scores of 7-30, 7-30 and 22-30. After Shenandoah defeated Sweet Briar in 3 straight sets, Salem College played the visiting Vixens. The hard fought battle between the Spirits and Vixens lasted five sets. The scores were 30-28, 26-30, 20-30, 32-30, and 10-15 with Sweet Briar (3-9) hanging on for the win.

Shakila Springs, a first-year student-athlete from Glenn High School, led the Spirits with 6 blocks, 7 digs, and 8 kills during the match with Sweet Briar College. Kelly Moose (Conover, NC) had 13 assists, 8 kills and 7 digs. Nikki Healey (Plymouth, MA) contributed 8 digs while Alexis Means (Durham, NC) had 7 digs and 5 kills.

After the games, Coach Francis stated that “This was the best the volleyball ladies have looked all season. I was very pleased with their effort. Shakila is really becoming a good player, and Kelly Moose had some fine plays today.”

Salem College will host the Pacers of Peace College on Tuesday, October 3, at 7 pm.
