Volleyball Defeats Johnson C. Smith on the Road

October 29, 2008

Charlotte, NC- The Salem College volleyball team defeated Johnson C. Smith on the road (23-25, 25-14, 25-21, 21-25, 15-11). Salem has now won four of their last six games. The victory improves their record to 14-20, while Johnson C. Smith drops to 8-16.

Sara Maher (Longmont, CO) led the way with 39 assists, 9 digs, 7 aces, and 3 kills. Christine Tillman (King, NC) had a strong night with 16 kills. Katie Lineberger (Maiden, NC) had 15 kills and led the team with 22 digs. Khadija Layne (Dorcester, MA) also had a strong night with 8 kills, 13 digs, and 1 ace.

Head Coach Amanda Ziemba said, "We started off slow and eventually found our rhythm. We did not serve or hit very aggressively in the first game. Once we decided that is what we have to do to win, there was a lot more excitement. Johnson C. Smith has very much improved throughout the season. We just needed to show how much we have improved as well. Khadija played a very solid game today. She is really stepping into her own and Sara did a very nice job of spreading the offense and keeping their blockers guessing."

Salem wraps up their regular season on Friday as they travel to Guilford at 6:30 pm.
