Volleyball Earns Two Big Wins at Home

October 4, 2008-

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College volleyball team won two matches today at home against Saint Pauls College and Guilford College. Salem won their morning match against Saint Pauls in three games (25-18, 25-20, 25-16). They would play a thrilling 5 game match against Guilford, which they won (25-22, 14-25, 25-18, 24-26, 15-11). Salem's record improves to 6-12, while Saint Pauls drops to 3-17 and Guilford to 5-15. Salem continues to build on the most wins in school history.

In the match against Saint Pauls, Katie Lineberger (Maiden, NC) led the team with 15 kills. Sara Maher (Longmont, CO) had the most assists with 20 and digs with 7. Christine Tillman (King, NC) also had 6 digs. Khadija Layne (Dorcester, MA) had the most aces with 4.

Tillman would lead the Spirits in kills against Guilford with 21 and she also provided 4 blocks. Maher again had the most assists with 28. Lineberger led the way with 17 digs and 2 aces. Stephanee Thibodeaux (Jacksonville, NC) also had 16 digs in the match.

"I am very happy with the outcome of the matches today," said Head Coach Amanda Ziemba. "It is always nice to win at home. Our first match was not the best offensive game but our defense was very solid. We need to stay focused and play up to our potental at all times. We played much better against Guilford. A month ago, we would not have been able to pull out a win in a match like this. I am very proud of the team for not letting up. We went through some ups and downs, but we finally settled down and stuck with the plan of hitting the ball hard. Katie and Christine really came through when we needed them to! They are our leaders and the team looks to them to get the job done. Sara had another very consistent match. Stephanee really played excellent defense against Guilford. Her passing has become much more consistent since the loss of Jordan to injury. I hope we continue this level of play next week."

Salem returns to action on October 7 as they travel down the road to Piedmont Bible College at 7 pm.
