Fall Review: 2012 Volleyball Team

Winston-Salem, NC-The 2012 edition of the Salem College volleyball team had a season of many firsts. The team went to the NCAA Tournament and won the Great South Athletic Conference Tournament for the 1st time in school history. They also reached the .500 mark for winning percentage for the first time both overall (14-14) and in the conference (5-5).

The Spirits had 4 players on the Great South All-Conference team, 1 player on the GSAC All-Freshmen team, and 2 players on the GSAC All-Academic Team. Roslyn Nixon (Wilson, NC), Michelle Morgan (Chattanooga, TN), Brittany Miller (Hays, NC) and Zy Henderson (Spartanburg, SC) were all on the all-conference team, and Kelsey Defosse (Wichita Falls, TX) made the all-freshmen team.

The Spirits defeated Agnes Scott 3-2 in the conference semifinals after coming back from a 2-0 deficit. The Spirits easily defeated Huntingdon 3-1 in the championships, after losing to them twice in the regular season. Chelsea Jones (Glade Valley, NC) became the first Salem College athlete to win a GSAC Tournament Most Valuable Player award.

Salem played against Emory University, who at the time was ranked 4th in the nation, in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament. The Spirits fell to Emory 3-0 at Christopher Newport University.

Salem loses 2 seniors that will graduate. Both Miller and Katie O'Leary were 4-year players for Salem.

Nixon led the team with 2.55 kills per set this season. Jones led the team with 7.32 sets assists per set. Henderson had 2.71 digs per set and Miller added 2.48 digs per set.
