Volleyball splits on first day of 2014 season

Harrisonburg, VA-The Salem College volleyball team split their opening day at the Eastern Mennonite Invitational. They defeated Mary Baldwin 3-1 (27-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-15) and fell to Catholic 0-3 (15-25, 18-25, 23-25). Salem is now 1-1 for the season.

In the Mary Baldwin match, Hillary McPhatter led the Spirits with 11 kills. She also had 14 digs and 2 service aces. Taylor Rhodes had a strong match with 23 assists, 16 digs, and 2 service aces. Brandy Bednorz added 16 assists. Zy Henderson had a strong defensive match with 33 digs.

Against Catholic, Roslyn Nixon and McPhatter each had 7 kills to lead Salem. Rhodes had 17 assists, and Henderson led the Spirits with 21 digs.
The Spirits return to action tomorrow when they take of the hosts at 12:00 and Goucher at 2:00.
