Volleyball wins first match of Coach Troup era

Winston-Salem, NC-Head Coach Kevin Troup picked up his first collegiate win in spectacular fashion as his team gutted out a 3-2 (25-20, 13-25, 27-25, 17-25, 15-13) win against Greensboro College tonight. Mariah Sharon had a huge night for the Spirits in the back and forth match. The Spirits improve to 1-4, while the Pride drop to 2-3.

The Spirits jumped out to an early lead after a strong first set. After Greensboro won the second, Salem battled back from a late deficit in the third to win. Greensboro took the next set. In the fifth and deciding set, Salem once again fell in a hole, but did not give up and won 15-13 to take the match.

Sharon had 16 kills to lead both teams. She also had the most digs in the match with 21, and the most service aces with 6.

Kylie Taffer led both teams with 3 solo blocks. She also had 7 kills and so did Bernisha Master. Brandy Bednorz had a season high 35 set assists, and she also had 17 digs.

The Spirits return to action next Tuesday when they host Meredith.
