Volleyball has strong opening weekend at EMU Invitational

Harrisonburg, VA-The Salem College volleyball team had a great weekend at the Eastern Mennonite Invitational as they started the season with a 2-2 record. The Spirits earned win over the hosts of EMU (3-1) yesterday, before they dropped a match to Lynchburg (1-3). Salem came back with an easy 3-0 win against Goucher today, before a 0-3 loss to Bridgewater.

Here is the EMU All-Invitational Team:

EMU Invitational All-Tournament Team

In the opening match against EMU, Salem started slow and lost the first game. They turned up their intensity the next three games to cruise to the win (18-25, 25-22, 25-17, 25-19). In the Lynchburg match, the start was dead even as both teams took a set. Lynchburg was able to take the 3rd and 4th sets and the match (12-25, 25-21, 12-25, 21-25).

This morning, the Spirits cruised to a 3-0 win against Goucher (25-10, 25-15, 25-21). Bridgewater was too much for Salem in the final match of the weekend (17-25, 15-25, 16-25).

Two first-years playing their first collegiate athletic action this weekend had a memorable invitational. Hannah Delcamp finished with 100 set assists in the 4 matches. Taylor Moulton led the Spirits with 38 kills and was second with 31 digs.

2015 Great South All-Conference performers, Mariah Sharon and Kylie Taffer, also had great weekends. Taffer finished with 34 kills, while Sharon led the Spirits with 46 digs. Bernisha Master had 13 blocks for Salem for the weekend.

Salem returns to the road this week, when they play at Randolph on Wednesday, before their home opener against Guilford on Thursday.
