Volleyball wins thrilling USA South opener

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College volleyball team won a thrilling USA South Athletic Conference opening match at home against Methodist. The Spirits came back to win 3-1 (22-25, 25-21, 27-25, 30-28). Salem is now 1-0 in the USA South and continue the best start in program history with a 9-4 record.

Methodist won a close first set, and Salem cruised to the second set victory. The third and fourth sets were back and forth affairs that went into extra points with the Spirits pulling out both sets with several clutch plays.

Maggie Hawks had a very strong 43 digs. Kylie Taffer led the Spirits with 16 kills, while Kathryn O'Connell had 10 and Madelyn Chappell had 9. O'Connell had a very stron 3 solo blocks and 6 block assists, while Chappell had 4 block assists and Taylor Moulton had 3 block assists. Hannah Delcamp led the Spirits with 25 set assists and Lauren Holman had 20. Moulton had 21 digs and Delcamp had 16 digs.

The Spirits return to USA South tomorrow as they play NC Wesleyan and Ferrum in Rocky Mount.
