THREE-DAY, FOUR-MATCH STRETCH AWAITS SALEM
For the second time in as many weeks the Salem volleyball team concludes the weekend with a flurry of matches. While Salem played both Mary Baldwin and Methodist in a tri-match a week ago, the Spirits have four matches in a three-day stretch ahead of them this weekend. The stretch begins with a clash against Southern Virginia on Thursday evening in Buena Vista, Va.

Salem returns home to face N.C. Wesleyan on Friday, October 21st at 6 p.m. in Varsity Gym, making up a match that was cancelled as part of Hurricane Ian that had originally been set to take place in Raleigh, N.C. The Battling Bishops remain in town to face Salem at Varsity Gym the following afternoon, as part of a tri-match being hosted at Salem that will also pit the Spirits against William Peace at 4 p.m.

SECURING A WINNING SEASON
By virtue of the 3-0 win over Roanoke on Monday, October 17th, Salem secured just its second winning season in program history. The Spirits, who are 16-6, have eight games remaining in the 2022 regular season.

It is the first winning season for Salem since Kevin Troup guided the 2017 team to a 21-12 mark, which coincidentally marks the only other time in program history that the Spirits have topped 20 wins in a single season.

Salem has had two .500 seasons over the course of the program's existence, dating back to 2008. Those came in 2012 under head coach Dana Wall, who finished 14-14, and in 2019 under former coach Bouaketh Chanthavisouk, who also finished with a 14-14 record.

TURNAROUNDS IN 2022
At the close of the 2021 volleyball season there were 22 programs across the NCAA Division III ranks who had two wins or less, including the Salem squad that finished with a 1-23 mark.

However, with the addition of 11 first year players and one sophomore, which came in the form of Anna Rymer, Salem has the biggest turnaround in the NCAA from a season ago—boasting a 16-6 record (+15 wins).

Only one other program, Belhaven, which finished 2-23 overall a season ago, has improved its win total by at least six wins. Belhaven is 8-14 in 2023. Additionally, none of those 22 programs with two wins or less has a winning record other than Salem in 2023.
