Winston-Salem, NC- Salem College hosted the 3rd Annual Salem College Cross-Country Invitational on Saturday morning. Rachel Fichthorn (Nokesville, VA) of Salem College won the women’s race with a collegiate best 20:34 on the 5000 meter course, breaking the school record by 24 seconds. In the past 15 days, Fichthorn has broken the 4k, 5k and 6k school records for Salem College. Marc Ramsey of Guilford College won the men’s race in the time of 19:39.
In women’s team competition, Salem College placed their top five in the first 12 finishers to score 25 points and win the championship plaque. Meredith College placed second with 32 points and Guilford College finished third with 67 points. Members of North Carolina Wesleyan College and Jefferson College of Health Sciences also competed but did not have a complete team.
Guilford College won the men’s race with a perfect score of 15. Jefferson College of Health Sciences competed with a partial team, thus finishing second in team competition.
For the Salem Spirits, Daphne Nichols (Machiasport, ME) placed second overall in her second collegiate race in a time of 22:49. Julie Piernikowski (Potomac, MD) placed 4th (23:49), Lauren Meek (Draper, VA) captured 6th place (24:29) and Ariel Barker (Monroe, NC) finished 12th (26:32) to round out the scoring for Salem College. Anna Nieboer (St. Cloud, FL) finished 23rd in a time of 31:42.
