Cross Country Finishes in Second in Greensboro

September 27, 2008

Greensboro, NC-The Salem College cross country team had four runners in the top eleven and finished in 2nd place today at the Greensboro Invitational. Rachel Fichthorn (Nokesville, VA) finished the 5k race in third place with a time of 20:39. Julie Piernikowski (Potomac, MD), Lauren Meek (Draper, VA), and Kirsten Roberts (Abingdon, VA) were all in the top eleven runners in the race. Lynchburg College was the overall winner of the race.

Fichthorn finished in the top three for the second time in two weeks. Piernikowski came across in 22:40 and in 9th place. Meek came in two seconds later to finish in 10th. Roberts finished the race in 23:18 to come in 11th. Salem competed against seven other NCAA DIII teams in the race.

Salem will return to Greensboro next weekend for the Hagan Stone Invitational on October 4th.

“The course was extremely muddy today after 48 hours of rain and yet our ladies ran their best race so far this season," said Head Coadh J.P. Widner. "We beat every Division III team today except for Lynchburg, who is the #5 team in the South/Southeast Region. Rachel was the top North Carolina harrier and Julie and Lauren finished in the top ten. Kirsten ran a gutsy race, finishing 11th despite being very sick. Both Catherine and Jessi ran seasonal bests today. I’m very proud of this Salem College Cross Country Team.”
