Cross Country has strong day at USA South Championships

Pleasant Gardens, NC- The USA South Conference Cross-Country Championships were hosted today at Hagan Stone Park. Despite not being a member of the conference, Salem College participated as an invited guest team. Salem College ran well as they finished as the fourth team out of eleven represented.

Rachel Fichthorn (SR, Nokesville, VA) broke Salem College’s 6000 meter record by 14 seconds and finished 3rd out of 77 harriers with a time of 24:35. Fichthorn finished only 38 seconds behind the conference individual champion, Amy Wampler of Christopher Newport University.

Julie Piernikowski (FY, Potomac, MD) placed 21st (27:50) and Lauren Meek (JR, Draper, VA) finished 22nd (28:26) despite taking a fall during the race. Catherine Mixon (FY, Simpsonville, SC), Jessi Martinez (FY, Houston, TX) and Alyssa McGinnis (FY, High Point, NC) ran well for the Spirits.

The Spirits return to action as they compete in the South/Southeast NCAA Division III Regional Championships in Sequin, Texas on November 15.
