Cross Country Wins Salem Invitational

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College cross country team won the 4th Salem College Invitational this morning. The team has now won the invitational for the second straight year. Salem took the first four positions on the 5k course.

Rachel Fichthorn (Nokesville, VA) repeated as the champion with a time that was over two minutes faster then any other participant. Lauren Meek (Draper, VA), Kirsten Roberts (Abingdon, VA), and Julie Piernikowski (Potomac, MD) finished the race in second, third, and fourth.

Meredith College finished the meet in second, and North Carolina Wesleyan rounded out the top three. There was also a men's race, which was won by Joshua Horan (Ferrum College) in 19:11. Ferrum won the men's race. Salem returns to the road next week as they head to Roanoke College for the Maroon Invitational on September 20th.

"The team ran well today as Salem captured the top four spots and then hung on to win the invitational," said Salem Coach J.P. Widner. "Rachel repeated as the women's champion, while Lauren, Kristin, and Julie ran well. Catherine insured Salem College the victory when she finished while Alysia and Jessi worked hard for us. It was a great victory for the team as they continue to improve in this young 2008 season."
