Training for a 5K course is a success

May 08, 2010

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College physical education department introduced "Training for a 5K" as a new course this spring semester. The purpose of the course was to train Salem students to prepare for a five-kilometer road race. The class culminated with the members participating in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which is hosted at Salem College.

The class was instructed by Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Shawn Marek. Samantha Styers (Walnut Cove, NC), Ariel Barker (Monroe, NC), Julie Ann Bigsby (Salisbury, NC) and Catherine Mixon (Simpsonville, SC) are all members of the Salem College Cross Country team that were enrolled in the class. They helped mentor the other class members to running faster times from the start of the course until the Race for the Cure. The majority of these other students had no experience with long distance running. The class also consisted of six other student-athletes from volleyball, swimming, basketball, and soccer.
