Cross country earns several Great South postseason honors

Maryville, TN-The Salem College cross country team was well represented in the Great South Athletic Conference postseason awards given out today at the GSAC Championships hosted by Maryville College. Stephanie Mendez (Atlanta, GA) was selected to the GSAC All-Conference team for the second year in a row. Salem finished in third in the GSAC Championships as a team.

Mendez earned the all-conference award by finishing in the top ten in the championship meet. She ran the 6K course in 28:39 and was the 7th overall runner. Mendez was both an all-conference and all-freshman performer last year as a first year. She was also selected to the GSAC All-Academic team for maintaining above a 3.25 GPA and being a sophomore or above.

The Spirits also had two members selected to the GSAC All-Freshman team this year. Natali Olveda (Litchfield Park, AZ) was the 13th overall runner in the meet and the third first year to cross the line. Joanna Mills (Cary, NC) was also selected to the all-freshman team because she was the 5th overall first year across the line. Bethany Eaton (State Road, NC) joined Mendez on the GSAC All-Academic team.

Huntingdon was the overall team champion. Caitlin McMahon from Huntingdon was the runner of the year and Molly Atkinson from Piedmont was the freshman of the year. Nate Rucker from Huntingdon was the coach of the year.
