Fall Sports Preview: Week 1

Team: Cross Country
Contest: St. Andrews University 5K Invitational in Laurinburg, NC on Friday the 30th at 6:30 pm
Opponents: Meredith, St. Andrews, and Columbia International
Preview: Salem College is returning four of its top five runners from last year including: Natali Olveda (Salinas, CA), Cristi Magracia (Lemon Grove, CA), Elizabeth Penley (Newport, NC) and Tali Schroeder (Lexington, VA). In addition to the returners, Salem has added four new runners to the cross country team including Salem Track and Field team members Stephanie Verdi (High Point, NC) and AJ Wierda (Greenville, MI). The team has added two first-year Salem runners Gigi Andrews (East Bend, NC) and Amanda Johnson (Virginia Beach, VA). After only a week and a half of practice, they have looked very strong in workouts.  This team is possibly the best cross country team in the past three years at Salem.

Opponent: North Carolina Wesleyan
Date, Time, and Place: Saturday the 31st at 2:00 pm in Rocky Mount, NC
Preview: North Carolina Wesleyan is coming off a 2-0 win at home in a scrimmage against Division II Chowan. The Bishops return most of their starters from last year. Salem defeated NC Wesleyan 4-1 last year at home. The two opponents only other meeting was in 2008, when Salem defeated NCWC 2-1 on the road.

 

Team: Volleyball
Opponents: Howard Payne, Goucher, Mary Baldwin, and Eastern Mennonite University (EMU)
Date, Time, and Place: On August 30th at 3:00 and 7:00 pm, and on August 31st at 10:00 am and 12:00 pm at the EMU Tournament in Harrisonburg, VA
Preview: Salem did not play any of these four opponents last year. Howard Payne finished 10-16 last year, and is picked to finish in 8th in the American Southwest Conference. Goucher finished at 9-24 in 2012. Mary Baldwin only has two returners and is picked to finish in last in the USA South. EMU is picked to finish in 12th in the ODAC, after not winning a conference match since 2009.
