Spirits Make First Road Trip, Head to Emory & Henry

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Just three days after playing its first two games of the 2020 season against Guilford, the Salem softball team will trek to the Commonwealth of Virginia for a road clash with Emory & Henry on Saturday, Feb. 22. The doubleheader will begin at 1 p.m. and the second game will start at approximately 3 p.m.

After having four games cancelled to open the season on the Feb. 14-15 weekend, the Spirits hosted Guilford on Wednesday evening. The Quakers opened the doubleheader with a 10-5 win, highlighted by an eight-run second inning, and wrapped up the night cap with a 12-9 victory due in large part to a seven-run sixth.

Salem heads into its first road test of the season led in hitting by the combination of Breanna Herman and Brittany Morton, who share the team-lead in hits. Morton went 4-for-5 from the plate with two RBI, two runs scored and a home run against the Quakers, to lead the Spirits with a .800 batting average. Morton capped off the first series of the season by going 4-for-8 (.500 batting average), accounting for four RBI, two doubles and a home run.

There are a total of six Spirits with at least two hits heading into the weekend, including Miranda Baker (three), Brianne Coleman (two), Jessica Cummings (two) and Hannah Thompson (two).

Baker was also prominent on the mound for Salem, logging 8.1 innings, allowing 13 hits, three walks and two earned runs in two appearances against the Quakers.

Emory & Henry (2-2) claimed its two victories on the season against No. 15 Birmingham-Southern (5-0) and Covenant (12-2) during the Birmingham-Southern Classic on Feb. 14-15. The Wasps closed out the tournament with a 3-2 setback to No. 24 DePauw, moving to 2-2.

Leanna Toler tops the Emory & Henry lineup with five hits, going 5-for-14 from the plate this season. Teammate Alex Braun has the most extra-base hits (three), all in the form of doubles, and is responsible for an .875 slugging percentage.

Cameron Derr anchors the pitching staff with 15 innings pitched and 21 strikeouts, limiting opposing hitters to 10 hits and six runs (three earned).
