Huntingdon, Agnes Scott Due Up Next for Salem Softball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem softball team begins a four-game in two-day stretch on Saturday, Feb. 29, when it heads to Montgomery, Ala., for a doubleheader clash with USA South Conference member Huntingdon which is set for 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Spirits then trek to Decatur, Ga., for a meeting with Agnes Scott on Sunday, March 1, at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

Salem (0-4) remains in search of its first win of the season after suffering a pair of setbacks to Emory & Henry on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Spirits are led at the plate by Breanna Herman (.500 batting average), who has five hits, including a home run. Sophomore Brianne Coleman is second in batting average (.444) with four hits, a home run and two RBI to her credit.

Miranda Barker rounds out the top three hitters in the Salem lineup, hitting .429 on the season with a team-best six hits to her credit, one of which resulted in a double. Barker is 0-2 on the mound for Salem, tossing 15.1 innings, allowing 23 hits, 17 runs, six earned runs while striking out six opposing hitters.

Huntingdon (3-3), which has split its last four games, will host the Spirits on Saturday, Feb. 29 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Emma Spurlin tops the Huntingdon lineup in batting average (.500), hitting 2-for-4 from the plate. Spurlin is one of four Hawk hitters with at least a .350 batting average, including Sydney Conville (.444), Mollie Singleterry (.368) and Michaela Denney (.353).

Denney and teammate Hannah Sims, who lead Huntingdon with the most hits (six), have accounted for two doubles apiece. Denney has capitalized on those six hits to lead the unit with seven RBI.

Agnes Scott (2-4) will begin the weekend with a doubleheader clash against Pfeiffer on Saturday at 12 p.m. The Scotties last took the field on Sunday, Feb. 23, when they dropped a pair of games to Point University (7-2 / 12-10), moving them to 2-2 at home.

Sophomore KayLeigh Fitzgerald leads the way for the Agnes Scott in runs (eight), RBI (nine), hits (12) and batting average (.600). Fitzgerald has taken advantage of two home runs, a double and a triple along the way to a team-best 1.050 slugging percentage. Emma Thomas is second on the unit with seven hits, owning a .412 hitting percentage.

The top hurler for the Scotties is Sidney Strama, who despite an 0-1 record is responsible for a 2.21 ERA. Strama has logged 6.1 innings, surrendered six runs (two earned runs), four walks and converted one strikeout. First year classmate Dash Acker has tallied the most innings (seven) of any Agnes Scott pitcher, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits in three appearances.
