Basketball Loses Close Game In USA South Tournament

Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College basketball team had its season end tonight with a 66-63 loss at North Carolina Wesleyan in the USA South Tournament. First-year, Tyler Davenport, had the best game of her career with a double-double of 33 points and 13 rebounds. Salem ends the season with a 10-15 record, while NC Wesleyan improves to 13-13 and will travel to Greensboro College for their quarterfinal game.

Salem jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. They would hold a 16-11 lead after the first quarter and a 28-25 lead at the half. NC Wesleyan outscored Salem by 8 points in the third to take a 45-40 lead heading into the final quarter. Salem tied the game at 61 with less than two minutes to go. The final two minutes was back and forth before NC Wesleyan was able to knock down some key free throws and force turnovers to close out the game with a win.

Seniors, Mikayla Seivers and Sabrina Shepherd, each scored 10 points for Salem. Hannah McBride led the team with 5 steals, and Davenport and Shepherd each had 3 blocks. Salem had a 40.4 field goal percentage to just a 30.1 percentage for NC Wesleyan. Wesleyan out-rebounded Salem 56-44 and forced 20 turnovers, while Salem forced 12 turnovers.
