Winston-Salem, NC-The Salem College soccer team defeated the defending USA South Champions, Piedmont College 1-0, to move into first place in the USA South West Division. Brooke Bukas scored on an assist by Maddie Crumpton in the 84th minute for the win. Salem improves to 10-1-1 overall, while Piedmont drops to 6-4-1 and 6-2-1 in the USA South.
The two teams played nearly 194 minutes this season without a goal before Bukas scored the game-winner today. Two weeks ago, Salem and Piedmont played to a double-overtime 0-0 draw at Piedmont.
Salem out-shot the Lions 12-10. Piedmont held a 4-3 corner kick advantage. The Spirits return to the road for four straight matches as they play Agnes Scott on Saturday and Wesleyan on Sunday.
