WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem soccer team heads to Georgia this weekend for a pair of matches against fellow USA South Conference members Covenant and Agnes Scott. In the first match, which takes place on Saturday, the Spirits head to Lookout Mountain, Ga., to take on Covenant at 1 p.m. Salem makes a quick turnaround on Sunday afternoon, squaring off against Agnes Scott at 2 p.m.

Salem, which is in the midst of its longest road stretch of the season, is looking to rebound from a tough 3-0 setback to Guilford on Wednesday evening. The Spirits (1-1) are led offensively by Ellie Montes, who has three points (one goal / one assist) to her credit, while teammates Martha Santos (four shots) and Madison Green (two shots) have also been active.

Jordan Tomberlin (1-1) has logged all 180 minutes in goal for Salem, making four saves (.636 save percentage).

Covenant heads into the match with a 0-1-1 mark after a double overtime tie (1-1) with Sewanee on Wednesday. The Scots opened the season with a 4-1 setback to Centre on August 30.

The Scots are led individually by Kailey Burrell and Kyra Duble, who have one goal each, with Burrell taking five shots (three shots on goal) on the early season. Teammate Lizzy Hightower has the second-most shots with four.

Lucy Sandhoff (0-1-1) has earned the starting nod in goal for Covenant in both contests, making 18 saves (.783 save percentage) along the way.

Agnes Scott (0-1) opens the weekend with a clash against William Peace on Saturday at 12 p.m. before playing host to the Spirits. The Scotties last took the field on August 31, against Randolph, suffering a 1—0 setback in the process.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE SPIRITS

Guilford 3, Salem 0: Junior standout Ellie Montes finished with four shots, including one shot on goal, but it was Guilford's defense that kept Salem in check as the Quakers opened their season with a 3-0 win at Herb Appenzeller Field on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The Spirits (1-1) tallied seven shots, highlighted by the four from Montes, along with one each from Kim Sephaphathi, Rachel Black and Kylie Clark. All seven shots for Salem came in the second half, while Guilford had six in the first frame and 11 in the second.

The Quakers (1-0) combo of Brianna Garcia and Morgan Malikowski spent 45 minutes in goal, with Garcia earning the victory. Malikowski made both saves, while Salem's Jordan Tomberlin (1-1) took the loss despite making six saves.

A spirited contest throughout, Salem tallied 12 fouls and Guilford was responsible for 15. The two teams combined for five yellow cards, three issued to Salem and two on Guilford, in the match.
