Santos Scores Two Goals in Salem’s 3-0 Win at Meredith

RALEIGH, N.C. – Senior Martha Santos netted two goals and teammate Ellie Montes found the back of the net for the fourth time this season as the Salem soccer team picked up its third shutout in its last five matches with a 3-0 triumph over Meredith on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Montes opened scoring at the 7:25 mark, using her speed to penetrate the Meredith (1-9, 0-1 USA South) as the Spirits assumed the 1-0 advantage.

Santos closed out first half scoring, providing Salem (5-4-1, 1-1-0 USA South) with a two-goal advantage at the 37:44 mark, when Alyssa Denkovich found her open teammate for her second assist of the campaign.

The third and final goal of the contest also came off the foot of Santos, who converted a pass from Courtney Chaplin at the 63:10 mark. Santos joined teammate Madison Green as the only Salem player this season to have a two-goal performance. Green accomplished the feat in a 5-4 win at Covenant on Sept. 7.

Defensively, senior netminder Hannah Wagner collected her third win of the season after making one save over 70:11. Jordan Tomberlin spent 19:49 in goal, also finishing with one save.

Salem attempted 25 shots in the match, including 18 on goal, with seven players attempting multiple shots. Individually, Montes and Santos attempted six shots over the course of the game. All six of the attempts by Montes were on goal, while five of Santos were shots on goal.

The combination of Chaplin (two), Denkovich (two), Green (one), Baylee Greenwood (one) and Kim Sephaphathi (one) all had two shots in the match. Salem closed the match with 17 shots in the first half, while Meredith managed two.
