Spirits Host Averett in Saturday Soccer Clash

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem soccer team, winners of three of its last five matches, returns home on Saturday, Oct. 5 to host Averett at 2 p.m. in a key USA South Conference clash at Varsity Field.

The Spirits, who improved to 5-4-1 with their third shutout of the season on Tuesday evening at Meredith (3-0), are 1-2-1 at home in 2019. The lone victory was a non-conference triumph over Emory & Henry (2-0) on Sept. 19.

Salem, which heads into the match tied for third alongside William Peace in the USA South standings, has five players with multiple goals on the season including Ellie Montes (four), Martha Santos (three), Amy Bounds (three), Baylee Greenwood (two) and Madison Green (two). Collectively, the offense has attempted 150 shots (86 shots on goal) and come through with 17 goals.

Defensively, the Spiriits are led in net by Hannah Wagner, who improved to 3-2-1 on the season in the win at Meredith. Wagner, with three shutouts to her credit, has logged 605:08 minutes in net and made 29 saves (.784 save percentage) along the way. Opposing teams have made 103 shots (62 shots on goal) against Salem's defense in 2019.

Averett (0-11) remains in search of its first win of the season, last posting a victory at William Peace on Oct. 17, 2018. The Cougars are led offensively by the tandem of Kirsten Clancy and Adriana Perez, who have netted two goals each. On defense, Averett has put both Morgann Dills (853:04) and Kayla Sisco (135:00) in net. Dills has made 82 saves (.683 save percentage) and Sisco is responsible for a 10 saves (.455 save pct.).
