Spirits Travel to Rocky Mount, Tangle with N.C. Wesleyan

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem soccer team heads to Rocky Mount, N.C., this weekend for a USA South Conference battle with N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday at 2 p.m. The match is a showdown of the two fourth place units in the East Division standings.

The Spirits, who are 4-3 away from home in 2019, are looking to rebound from a 1-0 setback at Pfeiffer on Wednesday evening. In 12 contests, Salem has managed 189 shots (102 shots on goal), scoring 21 goals along the way. In comparison, the Spirits have taken part in four USA South matches, attempting 71 shots (37 shots on goal), converting eight goals in the process.

Ellie Montes, who last recorded a point for the Spirits at Meredith (Oct. 1), leads the Salem lineup with 12 points (four goals / four assists). She is one of four Salem players with at least three goals, including Martha Santos, Baylee Greenwood and Amy Bounds, who have netted three goals each. Santos has also tallied three assists, giving her nine total points.

Hannah Wagner (4-3-1) leads the way for the Salem defense with 33 saves in goal. Wagner, who has logged 740:08 minutes in net, is responsible for a .786 save percentage along with four shutouts.

N.C. Wesleyan is 4-7 overall and 2-2 in USA South Conference action following triumphs over Mary Baldwin (6-2) and Averett (5-0). Two of the four wins by the Battling Bishops have come at home. In 11 contests, N.C. Wesleyan has attempted 140 shots (67 shots on goal), recording 19 goals and two shutouts.

Sarah Cook tops the N.C. Wesleyan lineup among individuals with 14 points (six goals / two assists). Cook has three two-goal performances this season against Brevard (Sept. 11), Averett (Sept. 28) and Mary Baldwin (Oct. 5). Cook is tied with Cydney Nichols, who also has six goals, while Isabel Neall is tied with Cook in assists, with two.

Alicia Jacobs (4-6-0) anchors the Battling Bishops on defense with 59 saves (.728 save percentage) while logging 881:20 minutes.
