Salem Hosts Piedmont in USA South Soccer Quarterfinals on Saturday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem soccer team, riding a five-match winning streak, will host Piedmont in the USA South Conference quarterfinals on Saturday, Nov. 2 at Varsity Field. The match is set for 2 p.m., and due to league stipulations adult general admission is $6, while seniors and children through the age of 12 are $3. Members the faculty, staff and student body are free.

Salem, which earned second place in the USA South East Division standings with a 1-0 win over Methodist on Oct. 23, is 11-5-1 overall and 5-2-1 at home. The Spirits wrapped up October play with a 7-1 mark, three shutouts and four home victories.

A total of 10 Spirits have scored at least two goals this season, including Ellie Montes, who leads the way with six strikes and five assists for a total of 17 points. Senior Courtney Chaplin, with five goals and two assists to her credit has also been a vital part of the offense with three goals in the last five matches.

The combination of Rachel Black, Madison Green, Jae Lehman and Martha Santos have scored three goals this year for Salem, while Alyssa Denkovich and Kim Sephaphathi are responsible for two goals each.

As a unit, Salem has tallied 37 goals, 25 assists and taken 315 shots (171 shots on goal) in the first 17 matches of the season. The Spirits are responsible for a .543 shot on goal percentage in 2019.

Defensively, the tandem of Hannah Wagner (7-3-1) and Jordan Tomberlin (4-2-0) have tallied 44 and 17 saves, respectively. Wagner, who has logged 969:41 minutes in net, has been a part of five shutouts for Salem this season. The Spirits defense has limited opponents to 26 goals, 162 shots and 88 shots on goal this season.

Piedmont (14-6-1, 6-2-0 USA South) is the third-seeded team out of the USA South West Division. The Lions have won four straight matches, since claiming a 1-0 win over Huntingdon on Oct. 25. Piedmont followed up that win with a 1-0 decision against Bob Jones on Oct. 28, before downing Wesleyan by a score of 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon.

Amanda Weinhart tops the Piedmont lineup in goals with six goals and 12 points, while Reid Johnson has contributed five and Kaylee King and Anslyn Stamps have tallied four goals apiece. Cassie Kirk leads the way for the Lions with three assists.

Leading the way for the Lions in net are Miranda McNalley (13-6-0) and Emily Skelton (0-0-1). McNalley has converted 76 saves in 1765:18, while Skelton has contributed eight saves. The pair has combined for nine shutouts, including seven by McNalley, over the course of the season.
