Salem Tennis Earns 6-3 Win Over Ferrum

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem tennis team rebounded from a difficult season opening setback to Southern Virginia by claiming five wins in singles play as the Spirits downed Ferrum by a 6-3 margin at the Bert Lain Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.

Makenna Mason, the No. 1 seeded singles player for the Spirits, was responsible for one of the wins as she downed Autum Murray-Burns by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Teammate Lily Farr, the No. 2 seed, followed suit with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Jordan Thompson.

Ferrum's lone singles win came from Hailee Green, who downed Morgan Sholz by scores of 6-4, 6-4 (10-5) in the clash of No. 3 seeds. Salem got back on track with a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Haley Gilley, who took down fellow No. 4 seed Mallory Scott.

Grace Wilson's 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Ferrum's Chelsea Zizzi was also key in the Spirits' win on Saturday afternoon. As was teammate Carmen Wilkins, who came through with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Madison Wright in a meeting of No. 6 seeds.

Ferrum lead 2-1 in the match heading into singles action as Zizzi / Murray-Burns emerged with an 8-3 win over Farr / Wilson in No. 1 play. Salem's tandem of Gilley / Sholz took down Thompson / Wright by an 8-5 margin, but Ferrum claimed its second win of the afternoon as Green / Scott posted an 8-5 victory against Mason / Alyssa Cosentino.

The Spirits return to the courts on Saturday, Oct. 5 when they face Hollins at 1 p.m. at the Bert Lain Tennis Center. For more information on Salem tennis check out www.salemspirits.com.
