New Head Volleyball Coach Named

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Catherine Head has been named Head Volleyball Coach at Salem College effective July 2, Salem College Athletic Director Trish Hughes announced Thursday.

"We are thrilled Catherine is joining the Salem family," Hughes said. "She brings tremendous NCAA experience as a coach and as a former Division 1 athlete."

Head comes to Salem from Brevard College where she served as assistant volleyball coach. Prior to that, she has served as assistant coach at Greensboro College, where she primarily worked with middle and pin blockers, resulting in 72 solo blocks and 228 assisted blocks (1.6 blocks/set). Additionally, she served as Greensboro College's recruiting coordinator, executed practice plans for head coach Kaci Pike on specific occasions and arranged travel details for all matches.

"I am very humbled and honored to join the Salem College Athletic Department and return to my hometown," Head said. "I am excited to get in the gym with the student-athletes and get to know them as players but also as students in the classroom."

A four-year standout at Elon, Head capped off her collegiate career with 263 total blocks (0.93 blocks/set). She was responsible for 228 assisted blocks (35 solo blocks) and 316 kills (1.1 kills/set) in 282 sets. Head's best season for the Phoenix came as a senior where she played in 26 matches, tallied 112 kills (1.26 kills/set) and 93 total blocks (83 assisted blocks), while contributing a career-best 59 digs.

Head took her playing experience with the Elon Phoenix and passed it along to campers at the Elon University Volleyball Summer Camp, where she instructed during drills, provided individual skill instruction and coached assigned teams in tournament play while advising campers on the collegiate recruiting process.

The Kernersville native also gained valuable coaching experience with the Piedmont Volleyball Club. Over a three-year span, from 2015 to 2017, she served as head coach for both the 14U Regional Team and 18U Zonal Team while holding the title of assistant coach of the 17U National Team.

Prior to her collegiate career, Head attended Glenn High School, where she led her team to the most victories in program history and a Piedmont Triad 4-A Conference Co-Championship in 2010. She was also named the 2010 Capital Hill Classic MVP, and best blocker, as a member of the Piedmont Triad Volleyball Club.
