    Three members of the Salem volleyball team were acknowledged by the USA South Conference on Thursday, Nov. 7, when the league announced its top performers for the 2019 season. Among the Spirits recognized for their contributions were Kathryn O’Connell and Taylor Moulton, who were named Second Team East Division, and Anna Schneider, who was selected as a member of the All-Sportsmanship Team.

    The duo of Taylor Moulton and Kathryn O’Connell recorded 14 kills apiece, but it was not enough to hold off Greensboro’s trio of Sarah Egbers (19 kills), Hailey Stout (16) and Carly Uhlir (11), who carried The Pride to a 20-25, 15-25, 25-16, 25-21, 15-11 win in the opening round of the USA South Conference Volleyball Championships at Averett University in Danville, Va.

    Taylor Moulton, one of four seniors competing in their final match at Varsity Gym, made her presence felt against visiting Meredith by accounting for 19 kills and 13 digs. However, it was the Avenging Angels that emerged with a four-set victory by scores of 25-12, 25-21, 26-28 and 25-16.

    The Salem volleyball team closes out the 2019 home slate this week with a pair of matches against Pfeiffer and Meredith at Varsity Gym. The Spirits, who will play a total of four matches in a five-day stretch, will host Pfeiffer on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. Two days later, Salem will hold Senior Day festivities in a meeting with Meredith at 7 p.m.

    The Salem volleyball team posted two wins in a USA South Conference tri-match that featured Greensboro and N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday, Oct. 26, at Hanes Gymnasium. Salem opened the day by downing N.C. Wesleyan by scores of 25-23, 25-14 and 25-18. Later in the afternoon, the Spirits came through with a 25-21, 14-25, 25-20, 25-22 victory against the host Pride.

The Spirits began the day with a 25-18, 25-16, 25-23 win over Mary Baldwin and capped off the session with a 25-22, 25-16, 25-9 setback to William Peace in the evening.

    The Salem volleyball team begins a two-day, three-match stretch on Friday, Oct. 18, when the Spirits make a trek to West Virginia to face Bluefield State at 5:30 p.m. It is the first of three matches for Salem this weekend, which will play a USA South Conference tri-match on Saturday against Mary Baldwin (2 p.m.) and William Peace (4 p.m.) in Raleigh, N.C.
