Greensboro Marks First Conference Road Trip for Salem Softball

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem softball team heads to USA South Conference foe Greensboro on Saturday, April 2nd, for a doubleheader clash that is set to take place at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Latham Park.

It marks the first true road game for the Spirits, who are 3-15 on the season and 0-4 in league action, since playing at Ferrum on February 27th. Salem did take part in a neutral site event, the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., during a two-day stretch in February.

LEADERS IN DUGOUT FOR SALEM: The duo of Madison Thomas (.397 batting average) and Brianne Coleman (.391) lead the way for the Salem lineup through the first 19 games. Thomas is 23-of-58 at the plate, recording one triple and seven RBI on the season.

Meanwhile, Coleman has 18-of-46 at the plate for Salem, drawing a team-high 11 walks, while posting five doubles, three home runs and 11 RBI. Teammates Madeline Brown and Carlee McWilliam are tied for third-most hits on the team (11), while Savanah Atkins is second to Coleman in RBI with 10. Atkins has connected on eight hits, posting two doubles and two home runs this season.

Thomas is one of five pitchers to enter the circle for the Spirits this season, leading the team with a 3-7 mark and 36 K's. The Matthews, N.C., native has tossed 69 innings, allowed 74 runs (51 earned runs) and issued just 21 walks.

Salem freshman hurler Kat Price has emerged on the mound in recent weeks for head coach Kierston Garner, making a start in the opening game of the series against Shaw (March 19) and back-to-back starts versus William Peace on Tuesday afternoon.

Price has logged 17 innings in four appearances for Salem this season, allowing just 26 runs (19 earned runs) and converting one strikeout along the way.

ANALYZING THE PRIDE: Greensboro has won six of its last eight games dating back to a doubleheader clash with Bridgewater on March 19th, improving to 15-5 overall and 3-1 in the USA South in the process.

Eight Greensboro sluggers are responsible for a .300 batting average for The Pride, including Ivy Ray, who leads the way with a .465 average. Ray tops the unit in hits (30) and has a .470 slugging percentage along with a .486 on-base percentage.

Kassie Simmons, who is second in batting average (.443) for Greensboro, leads the unit in RBI (32) by virtue of five doubles and eight home runs.

The winningest pitcher on staff for The Pride is Cheyanne Cox, who owns an 8-3 record. She has tossed 10 complete games, logged 73.2 innings, allowed just 20 runs (16 earned runs) and has recorded 105 strikeouts. Cox has limited opposing hitters to just seven doubles and seven home runs this season.
