Salem, Southern Virginia Clash in Basketball on Wednesday

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem basketball team concludes a three-game homestand on Wednesday, January 12th, when it hosts Southern Virginia at 6 p.m. at Varsity Gym. It is the first of two three-game homestands for Salem, which is 1-4 at home this season.

Salem (1-12, 0-7 USA South) is in search of its first league victory since defeating Methodist by a 78-66 margin on January 16, 2019.

SPIRITS VERSUS USA SOUTH COMPETITION: Through the first seven games of league action, Cree Bass leads all Salem scorers with 70 points, hitting 24-of-61 from the floor, 10-of-30 from beyond the arc and 12-of-16 at the free throw line. Bass has also dished out a team-high 17 assists, while making nine steals, against league opposition, five more than Alize Brooks who is tied for second.

Bass has 18 more points than teammate Tyler Davenport, who leads the unit in free throws (28-of-37) against league competition. Joining her teammates with at least 50 points in USA South action is Dionne Sampson, who has 50 points, by virtue of hitting 18-of-59 from the floor and 11-of-15 at the charity stripe. Sampson also has a trio of 3-pointers to her credit in USA South play.

The leading rebounder in seven league outings is Tamsi Echendu, who has grabbed 47 boards (28 defensive rebounds) along with six steals. Both Bass and Alize Munn have 27 total rebounds for Salem in league play, tying for second-most on the team.

SOUTHERN VIRGINIA HEADS TO WINSTON-SALEM: Riding a five-game winning streak, new USA South Conference member Southern Virginia (8-3, 4-0 USA South) heads to Winston-Salem for the sixth all-time meeting with the Spirits.

The Knights began their current winning streak on December 4th when they took down N.C. Wesleyan by a 76-66 final. They followed with wins over Greensboro, Averett, Centre and Oglethorpe, all by double digits.

Savanna Christensen (112) and Katie Garrish (109) are the top two scorers for Southern Virginia through the first 11 games of the slate. Garrish leads the team in field goals (44), while Christensen tops the unit in free throws made (23). Emma Camden, who is 12-of-25 on the slate, is the top 3-point shooter on the team.

Garrish has also made her presence felt on defense with 73 rebounds (51 defensive), while making 22 blocks and forcing 15 steals, both team highs. Christensen is second with 60 blocks and has forced 14 steals.
