Guilford Awaits Salem in Intracity Clash

Guilford Awaits Salem in Intracity Clash

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem basketball team heads to nearby Greensboro to face Guilford on Monday evening at 6 p.m.

The Spirits go in search of their road win since claiming a 70-69 win at Meredith on February 10, 2018. The clash with the Quakers also marks the non-conference game of the season for Salem.

ANALYZING THE SPIRITS: Salem (1-13, 0-8 USA South) is coming off a solid performance against Southern Virginia on Wednesday evening. The Spirits suffered a 78-61 setback in a contest that was not indicative of the final score itself. After all, the two programs were separated by just six points at the 7:34 mark of the fourth quarter.

Salem's Tyler Davenport came through with 20 points and 10 rebounds, marking the third double-double of the season for the Spirits, in an all-around effort by the unit on Wednesday evening at Varsity Gym. Davenport led the way offensively for the Spirits, hitting 8-of-16 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the free throw line. She guided a Salem squad that finished 23-of-61 (37.7%) from the floor and 13-of-21 (61.9%) at the charity stripe.

Another major contributor against Southern Virginia was Lauren Privette, who equaled her single-game season-high (10), which she established against Bridgewater on December 29th. Privette has had five games this season in which she grabbed at least five rebounds and Wednesday marked her first against USA South competition.

Privette also had her fifth game of the slate with multiple blocks, giving her 18 on the slate, as she looks to become the first player in program history with at least 20 blocks in three different seasons. The Statesville, N.C., native needs one block to tie Alexiahonna Bush for the program record (86) and is two shy from becoming the all-time leader in blocks in program history.

QUAKERS COMPLETE NON-CONFERENCE SLATE: Guilford heads into the eighth all-time meeting with Salem by winning three of its last four games.

The Quakers grabbed a 72-40 win over Apprentice on December 11th and followed that by downing Eastern Mennonite 67-62 on January 8th. After suffering a 73-65 loss at the hands of Methodist on January 10th, the Quakers came through with a decisive 89-63 victory at Ferrum in their last outing on January 12th.

Guilford, which is 4-7 overall and 2-4 in the ODAC, will face Shenandoah at home on Saturday before hosting Salem on Monday evening. Lindsay Gauldin is the top scorer for the Quakers with 201 points (22.3 ppg) to her credit after hitting 62-of-141 (44.0%) from the floor and 71-of-90 (78.9%) at the free throw line. Caroline Wilkerson, who has knocked down 13-of-37 (35.1%) from 3-point range, is the top 3-point marksman for the Quakers.

Courtney McMillan has a team-high 77 rebounds, including 53 on the defensive glass, while Abby Kennedy ranks second with 74 total rebounds. Gualdin leads Guilford with 26 steals while Kennedy tops the unit in blocks with 13.
