Spirits Face Three USA South Foes This Week

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Salem basketball team heads into the final month of action with a three-game homestand that includes clashes with Pfeiffer (Feb. 1), Greensboro (Feb. 3) and Averett (Feb. 5) this week. The Spirits will then make a short trek to Greensboro to again face The Pride on Sunday, February 6th at 4 p.m.

Salem, which split a pair of games with Meredith over the weekend, is 2-14 overall and 1-9 in USA South Conference action. Both wins for the Spirits have come at Varsity Gym, where they are 2-5 this season.

SENIOR DAY FESTIVITIES SET FOR SATURDAY: Saturday's clash with Averett will mark Salem's 2022 Senior Day. The Spirits will honor the play of Sydney Bowen, Tyler Davenport and Lauren Privette.

SALEM TRIO KEY IN USA SOUTH ACTION: The Salem trio of Tyler Davenport (92 points), Cree Bass (87) and Dionne Sampson (86) have been the offensive spark in the 10 league contests this season. Davenport leads the way in scoring after hitting 27-of-76 from the floor and 36-of-47 at the free throw line.

Bass, second in scoring, is one of two players with 30 field goals (30-of-81), while knocking down 13-of-40 from 3-point range. Meanwhile, Sampson tops the Salem lineup in field goals (31-of-93) and is third in free throws (17-of-25). She tallied 30 points last weekend, including a 19-point outing at Meredith on Sunday, to give her six double-digit contests on the slate.

Tamsi Echendu has proved to be the top rebounder for Salem with 65 (42 defensive) total rebounds. Davenport is second on the team with 46, while Lauren Privette has grabbed 40 rebounds (33 defensive) while converting a team-high 11 blocks. Sampson leads the way in total steals with 17, one more than Bass.

PFEIFFER PREVIEW: The Falcons are 8-12 overall on the season and are 4-8 in USA South Conference play entering the week. They have won two of their last three games, both of which came against William Peace.

Offensively, Mya Johnson (130 points) and Brina Bentley (122) lead the Falcons in scoring in league play. Johnson has connected on 37-of-109 field goals, hitting 32 3-pointers and 47 free throws along the way, while Bentley tops the unit with 43 field goals on 102 attempts. Bentley has also proven to be a solid free throw shooter with 34 free throws on the slate.

Bentley and Johnson are separated by one rebound in USA South Conference action with Bentley hauling in 74 rebounds (49 defensive). Tanaeshea Ellison leads the way with 27 steals and Bentley is tops in blocks with seven.

GREENSBORO PREVIEW
: Greensboro is 18-1 overall on the season and 11-1 in USA South action, with the lone setback coming at Southern Virginia (79-68) on December 8th. The Pride enters the week on a nine-game winning streak, which began with a 71-54 win over Mary Baldwin.

Five players have scored at least 100 points for The Pride in USA South action, including Lauren Livingstone, who has 229 points (19.1 ppg) to her credit. Livingstone has converted 82-of-223 field goals, 26-of-89 3-pointers and 39-of-50 free throws on the season. She has also made her presence felt with 37 steals.

Quadijah Moore leads the Greensboro lineup with 115 rebounds against league foes, grabbing 83 defensive boards along the way.

AVERETT PREVIEW
: Averett makes its final trip to Winston-Salem as a member of the USA South Conference on Saturday afternoon. The Cougars are 4-13 overall and 4-6 in the league entering the week. They have lost five straight games, dating back to an 87-52 setback to Greensboro on January 15th.

The duo of Courtney Hunt and Camryn Lunsford, who have scored 95 and 89 points, respectively, lead the way for the Cougars in USA South play. Hunt has knocked down 29-of-91 field goals, including 13 3-pointers, while managing to hit 24-of-33 at the free throw line. Meanwhile, Lunsford leads the way with 33 field goals and has converted 21-of-32 free throw attempts.

Top rebounding honors for the Cougars belong to Jihnez Hutchinson, who has 63 boards (36 defensive) to her credit. Teammate Genesis Weiters has converted a team-best nine blocks.
