Davenport, Echendu Reach Double Figures Versus Knights

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Savanna Christensen scored a game-high 21 points and led four Southern Virginia players in double figures as the Knights earned a 106-55 victory over Salem in the USA South Conference finale for both teams on Wednesday evening in Buena Vista, Va. The Spirits were led offensively by the duo of Tyler Davenport and Tamsi Echendu, who scored 19 and 10 points, respectively.

Davenport topped the double-figure mark on 15 occasions during the season, scoring 20 on two occasions, and leaves the program with 555 career points after hitting 177-of-452 (39.2%) from the floor and 183-of-267 (68.5%) at the free throw line. Echendu closed out the season by notching six double-digit scoring performances, including 10-point outings in her final two contests—versus William Peace and Southern Virginia.

Davenport knocked down 7-of-13 from the floor for Salem (4-20, 3-15 USA South), while Echendu and teammate Alize Munn converted four field goals apiece. The tandem of Davenport (4-6) and Dionne Sampson (4-4) tied for the team lead in free throws for the Spirits. Echendu climbed the glass for a game-high five rebounds, while Cree Bass quarterbacked the offense with five assists.

The game also brought to close the careers of Lauren Privette and Sydney Bowen. Bowen logged 23 minutes and ends her career with 420 points, converting 153-of-546 from the floor and 59-of-238 from 3-point range. She also tallied 104 assists and 54 steals. Privette played 20 minutes against the Knights and ends her career in the blue and gold with 280 points, 437 rebounds (264 defensive), a program record 95 blocks along with 46 steals.

Southern Virginia (21-4, 17-1 USA South) capped off the game by scoring at least 20 points in each quarter, including a 35-point second quarter.

The Knights established an 11-3 lead, following a pair of free throws by Courtney McKrola, but a 7-2 run by the Spirits that was capped off by a trey from Savanah Atkins made for a three-point contest. Southern Virginia extended its lead to 16-11, but five points from Echendu, including a 3-pointer, helped provide the Spirits with a 20-18 lead. The Knights regained the lead 23-20 at the close of the first.

The Knights distanced themselves with a 35-point second quarter, hitting 12-of-21 (57.1%) from the floor and 7-of-11 (63.6%) from 3-point range. Emma Camden scored 10 points in the frame, while Taylor Miyasaki came off the bench to contribute nine points.

Southern Virginia's offense continued to click on all cylinders in the third, hitting 11-of-17 (64.7%) from the floor and knocking down four free throws. Both Christensen and Alyssa McKrola tallied six points for the Knights. The Southern Virginia starting five missed just two field goals over the course of the frame. Davenport highlighted the Spirits scoring with seven points, closing with two field goals, including a 3-pointer, along with a pair of free throws.

Salem closed out the final quarter by knocking down 6-of-13 (46.2%) from the floor, led by Alize Munn who was 3-of-3 from the field. Davenport added five points of her own, while Sampson and Echendu tallied two each. Anna Singer was one of eight Knights to score in the frame, highlighting a unit that converted eight field goals and a trio of 3-pointers.
