Covenant Prevails With 5-0 Win Over Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A pair of goals by Kailey Burrell, coupled with 16 shots on goal, allowed Covenant to earn a 5-0 victory over Salem in soccer action on Saturday, September 18th at Varsity Field.

The Scots, who improved to 3-4 on the season, attempted 21 shots over the course of the match, including 16 shots in the direction of the goal. Leading the way among individuals was Burrell, who tallied six shots, all on goal. Rachel Wall finished with five shots (three SOG) in the contest. The trio of Emma Riggs, Aiden Strawbridge and Tyneisha Herring all had two shots on the afternoon.

Covenant assumed the 1-0 lead at the 18:21 Burrell converted a breakaway goal to push the advantage to 2-0 for the Scots. Just over eight minutes later, in the 26th-minute, Strawbridge drove home a free kick attempt, which passed through the top of the net.

Riggs closed out first half scoring with a goal at the 34th minute when she put back a rebound into the left corner of the net, converting a rebound from teammate Leah Marr.

The lead reached 4-0 for the Scots in the 64th-minute when a kick to the left side of the net by Mae Pierce skated past Jordan Tomberlin. Burrell came through with her second goal of the afternoon in the 77th-minute following a pass by Mary Streets.

Tori Long opened the match in net for Salem, making six saves in the first half, while Jordan Tomberlin capped off the second frame with four saves. The shutout marked the first by an opposing team at Varsity Field since September 14, 2019, when Randolph-Macon claimed a 6-0 win over the Spirits. Salem dropped to 4-4 on the season with the setback.

The Salem offense, limited to nine shots over the course of the match, had five shots on goal. Baylee Greenwood attempted a team-best four shots, including one shot on goal, while Ashley Linden closed with two shots, both attempts on net.

The Spirits return to the pitch against Carolina University on Wednesday, September 22nd, when they host the match at 4 p.m.
