Greenwood, Tomberlin Highlight Salem’s 1-0 Win Over Pride

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The duo of Baylee Greenwood and Jordan Tomberlin were the catalyst for Salem's 1-0 victory over Greensboro in USA South Conference soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Greenwood was responsible for the only goal of the match, which delivered the fifth win of the season for the Spirits, while Tomberlin converted 14 saves. The 14-save performance placed Tomberlin in a four-way tie for the single-match high in saves alongside Andrea Baldwin, Jazmine Bridgeman and Hannah Wagner (2x). It was one save off the single-match program record (15), which is shared by the trio of Bridgeman, Taylor Barcom and Richi Hutchins.

After a scoreless first half of play, which resulted in a 12-1 advantage in shots by Greensboro, Greenwood converted a free kick from the left side of the field over the head of Pride goalkeeper Lindsay Fox to mark the only goal of the match in the 47th-minute. It was the only shot of the second half for Salem, while Greensboro finished with 17 in the frame.

Of the 29 total Greensboro (3-5-1, 1-1-0 USA South) shots, 14 were in the direction of the goal. Tomberlin, who notched her second shutout of the season, came through with eight saves in the second half of play.

Greenwood came through with one of the Salem shots, while teammate Anna Fretwell attempted the other. Salem improved to 5-6-1 overall and 1-1-0 in USA South action as it claimed the first league shutout since defeating Piedmont in Quarterfinals of the USA South Conference Tournament on November 2, 2019.

Salem completes its brief two-match homestand on Saturday, October 2nd when the Spirits host Averett at 1 p.m.
