Salem, Averett Square Off Saturday in USA South Conference Match

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Just four days after earning a 1-0 win over USA South Conference rival Greensboro, the Salem soccer team returns to the pitch to face fellow league foe Averett at Varsity Field on Saturday, October 2nd.

Salem, which is 5-6 overall and 1-1 in USA South Conference action, is in search of back-to-back victories for the first time since claiming wins over Warren Wilson (9-0) and Agnes Scott (8-0) to open the 2021 season. The Spirits, who are 2-2 at Varsity Field this season, are also looking to claim consecutive home wins since putting together a five-match winning streak between October 1, 2019 and November 2, 2019.

SPIRITS CLAIM FIRST USA SOUTH WIN: The duo of Baylee Greenwood and Jordan Tomberlin were the catalyst for Salem's 1-0 victory over Greensboro in USA South Conference soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Varsity Field.

Greenwood was responsible for the only goal of the match, which delivered the fifth win of the season for the Spirits, while Tomberlin converted 14 saves. The 14-save performance placed Tomberlin in a four-way tie for the single-match high in saves alongside Andrea Baldwin, Jazmine Bridgeman and Hannah Wagner (2x). It was one save off the single-match program record (15), which is shared by the trio of Bridgeman, Taylor Barcom and Richi Hutchins.

After a scoreless first half of play, which resulted in a 12-1 advantage in shots by Greensboro, Greenwood converted a free kick from the left side of the field over the head of Pride goalkeeper Lindsay Fox to mark the only goal of the match in the 47th-minute. It was the only shot of the second half for Salem, while Greensboro finished with 17 in the frame.

SALEM ANALYSIS: With Tuesday's goal, Greenwood now leads the Salem unit with eight on the season, two more than teammate Ellie Montes' six. Alyson Gammons is third on the unit with three goals and Mikalynne Shell has two on the season as well.

Greenwood shares the team lead in assists with first year Anna Fretwell, with the pair handing out four apiece, while Layla Locklear has dished out two assists.

Salem is led in net by sophomore Jordan Tomberlin, who has 47 saves (.887 save percentage), which has resulted in two shutouts and a pair of wins.

PREVIEWING AVERETT: The Cougars come into the match with a 3-3-1 overall record that includes a 1-1-0 record in USA South Conference play.

Averett halted a two-match losing skid on Tuesday with a 3-0 victory against William Peace, evening their mark in the USA South after a 2-1 double overtime loss to Meredith on September 25th.

Celia de Diego is the primary cog in the Cougars' offense with a team-high 10 goals. She has attempted 37 shots, including 20 shots on goal, and has a .541 shots on goal percentage. The top goalkeeper on the Averett roster is Morgann Dills, who has accumulated 24 saves and a .706 save percentage en route to three wins.

Saturday's match marks the ninth all-time meeting in the series between the two schools with each team winning four matches. Salem is 4-1-0 at home, but has not won a match in Danville, Va., at this point.

The two have evenly split the last four matches with Salem earning a 4-0 victory when the two last met on October 5, 2019.
