Salem Hosts Mary Baldwin Tuesday at Varsity Field

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – With just two home matches left in the 2021 campaign, the Salem soccer team welcomes Mary Baldwin to Varsity Field on Tuesday, October 12th at 4 p.m.

The Spirits (6-7-1, 2-2-1 USA South) are looking to move to .500 at home with a victory over Mary Baldwin. Salem has triumphed over both Agnes Scott (Sept. 4) and Greensboro (Sept. 28) this season.

SPIRITS, MEREDITH TIE: Jordan Tomberlin finished with nine saves for Salem and her counterpart Miranda Lutz closed with three for Meredith, battling to a scoreless 0-0 double overtime tie, in a USA South Conference battle between East Division teams on Saturday, October 9th in Raleigh.

Tomberlin, in rainy conditions throughout the day, turned away three shots by Meredith's Lillian Fox and two from her teammate Morgan Thomas over the course of the match. They marked the only Avenging Angels (4-3-2, 2-1-2) with multiple shots on goal in the match.

Tomberlin has come through with at least five saves in seven matches this season for Salem. She helped Salem earn its first tie since a double-overtime match with Piedmont on September 20, 2016.

TOMBERLIN GARNERS USA SOUTH DEFENSIVE POW HONORS: After a week in which she recorded two shutouts and 15 saves, resulting in a 1-0-1 mark, Salem goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin was named as USA South Defensive Player of the Week by league on Monday, October 11, 2021.

Tomberlin becomes the fifth different Spirit to earn USA South Defensive Player of the Week honors in program history, joining Sydney Priest (twice), Morgan Canepa, Alyssa Denkovich and Hannah Wagner who also earned the distinction.

The Merritt Island, Florida, native opened the week with a six-save performance against Pfeiffer, as Salem picked up the 1-0 victory, its fifth shutout of the campaign.

Three days later, on Saturday, October 9th, Tomberlin emerged with nine saves in a double overtime clash with Meredith. Tomberlin, in rainy conditions throughout the day, turned away three shots by Meredith's Lillian Fox and two from her teammate Morgan Thomas over the course of the match. They marked the only Avenging Angels with multiple shots on goal on the afternoon.

Tomberlin has made a team-high 66 saves in 731:18 minutes on the season for Salem, converting 40 saves in 458:45 minutes against USA South Conference foes. She has at least five saves in seven matches over the course of the 2021 season, including a single-match career-high 14 versus Greensboro on September 28th.

SOLID DEFENSIVE EFFORTS: The unsung Salem defense has surrendered just 18 goals and 13 assists over the course of the season. The collection of Isabel Scott, Lili Payne, Olivia Nivens, Gina Franco and Miriam Moctezuma have been instrumental in holding opponents to a .085 shot percentage in 212 shots by the opponents. That unit has helped the Spirits hold six opponents without a goal in 2021.

The goalkeeping trio of Tori Long, Jordan Tomberlin and Alexcina Wartski have combined for 107 saves (.856 save percentage) in net for Salem. Tomberlin leads the way with 66 saves in 11 matches, while Wartski is second with 26 saves (.963 save percentage). Long has recorded 14 saves and claimed two wins for Salem.

PREVIEWING MARY BALDWIN: Tuesday marks the second all-time meeting between Salem and Mary Baldwin on the pitch. Salem earned an 8-2 victory in the first-ever clash on October 26, 2019, which also took place in Winston-Salem.

Mary Baldwin (7-4-1, 3-1-1 USA South) has won three of its last four matches since the start of October. The Fighting Squirrels capped off September with a 2-1 victory over Southern Virginia before falling in a 2-1 clash with Methodist. Last week, Mary Baldwin claimed wins over both Averett (2-1) and N.C. Wesleyan (3-2).

The Fighting Squirrels are led in goals scored by the combination of Annie Ammons (eight) and Shea Rider (seven). Ammons has also been a complement to her fellow offensive players, handing out three assists, which ties her alongside Cyanne Harkins for the team lead.

Anyka Wilkin leads the team in saves with 40, resulting in four wins on the season, while teammate Nyasia Hawkins has grabbed three wins while making seven saves in net.
