Tomberlin Recognized as USA South Defensive Player of the Week

ROME, Ga. – After a week in which she recorded two shutouts and 15 saves, resulting in a 1-0-1 mark, Salem goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin was named as USA South Defensive Player of the Week by league on Monday, October 11, 2021.

Tomberlin becomes the fifth different Spirit to earn USA South Defensive Player of the Week honors in program history, joining Sydney Priest (twice), Morgan Canepa, Alyssa Denkovich and Hannah Wagner who also earned the distinction.

The Merritt Island, Florida, native opened the week with a six-save performance against Pfeiffer, as Salem picked up the 1-0 victory, its fifth shutout of the campaign.

Three days later, on Saturday, October 9th, Tomberlin emerged with nine saves in a double overtime clash with Meredith. Tomberlin, in rainy conditions throughout the day, turned away three shots by Meredith's Lillian Fox and two from her teammate Morgan Thomas over the course of the match. They marked the only Avenging Angels with multiple shots on goal on the afternoon.

Tomberlin has made a team-high 66 saves in 731:18 minutes on the season for Salem, converting 40 saves in 458:45 minutes against USA South Conference foes. She has at least five saves in seven matches over the course of the 2021 season, including a single-match career-high 14 versus Greensboro on September 28th.

"Jordan has done an outstanding job all season making the necessary saves and playing from the back with her feet," said Salem head coach Robin Ramirez. "We had a great week defensively and Jordan played a big part leading from the goal."
