Fighting Squirrels Convert Two First Half Goals Versus Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A pair of unassisted goals by Cyanne Harkins, scored under three minutes apart, proved to be the difference as Mary Baldwin earned a 2-0 victory over Salem at Varsity Field on Tuesday, October 12th.

Harkins put the Fighting Squirrels (8-4-1, 4-1-1 USA South) on the board in the seventh minute when she drove a 20-yard goal over Salem goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin, who narrowly missed the save as the ball touched the fingertip of her outstretched hand.

Just under three minutes later, Harkins struck again when she sent a rebound to the back right side of the goal to provide Mary Baldwin the 2-0 advantage. The initial shot, by the Fighting Squirrels' Shea Rider hit the post and ricocheted in the direction of Harkins, who notched her second goal of the match.

While Salem (6-8-1, 2-3-1 USA South) was unable to score in the contest, the Spirits attempted 24 shots and 14 shots on goal. It marks the fifth time this season that Salem has at least 20 shots in a match.

Ashley Linden, who attempted eight shots and three shots on goal, was tops among individual leaders for Salem. Teammates Baylee Greenwood and Amanda Rojo each finished with three shots (two SOG), while Layla Locklear and Anna Fretwell attempted two shots apiece.

Nyasia Hawkins improved to 5-3-1 in net for Mary Baldwin, recording 14 saves along the way. Meanwhile, Jordan Tomberlin slipped to 3-4-1 for the Spirits with an eight-save performance of her own. Tomberlin has now recorded at least five saves in eight matches this season for Salem.

The Spirits next two contests take place on the road at N.C. Wesleyan (Oct. 16) and Southern Virginia (Oct. 20) before returning home for Senior Day against William Peace on October 23rd.
